Jon Waller joined Just IT with a good degree in Physics but did not really know where his career was going. He was working in a golf club bar and thought IT might be a good area that would suit his skills. He evaluated the Just IT programme by sitting in on the training for a few days and then made the decision to follow the course with the knowledge that if he passed all the exams and did not get a job he would get his money back. It did not take long to see that Jon was focused and driven. He gained the exams and went to a work placement, which helped him gain the hands on skills people need. It was not long before he gained his first job in IT, within one of the most established financial companies in the world and we have been in contact with him since. “I’ve been at the LSE for 5 and a half years. I started out changing tapes, doing regular health checks and basic first line support. I learnt the technical skills around areas like Windows and UNIX – basically everything about Networks.

5 and a half years on, I am one of the most senior engineers in the network team and after working on a market multicast monitoring infrastructure and a ground-breaking international enterprise & database architecture. I am now the main Network engineer building the new secondary data centre infrastructure for the LSE. In addition to building and configuring the new network environment, my day-to-day role also includes the planning, managing and implementation for the migrations of each service across to the new site. Each week throws new and exciting challenges at me, which I could never have dreamt I would be capable of meeting, let alone overcoming.

I look back on the way I got into the industry through Just IT and it makes me wonder where I would have been if I had not have tried the training for free. I would recommend the course to anyone who is looking for a way into IT and who is willing to work hard and who is focused on technology”
