We asked Amil, who over sees the financial side of Just IT Training and Just IT Recruitment to give us his views on the importance of good communication. This news article gives us a good insight into how Just IT values good communication in helping candidates get the best jobs they can.
“Communication underpins the success of every organisation. Nowadays, it is no longer enough to be competent and skilful in technical matters, it is now a modern day requirement in an increasingly sophisticated business environment to be able to communicate clearly and effectively.
Successful candidates must show the ability to exercise a good level of assertiveness, influence and negotiation skills to assist in the achievement of the team goals and ultimately, the organisational goals. However, this is many times easier said than done. Communication can fail to be effective over a number of reasons ranging from poor language skills to lack of focus in the message to be conveyed. This is called “noise” and it effectively acts as a barrier to effective communication. Other barriers are biased communication (filtered by personal feelings and convictions); misinterpreted communication (due to personal beliefs or lack of familiarity) or omitted communication
(fear of disapproval or rejection).
As we continue to work in a diverse business environment; it becomes essential to be aware of one’s own personal style but also that of others and take into account their many different set of values, cultural backgrounds, religious beliefs, etc. Recognising these differences will certainly have a positive impact in your performance. Organisations today benefit greatly from the different viewpoints, ideas, problem solving and conflict handling skills that a diverse workforce brings to the table. But in order to ensure that communication continues to bring order, coordination and control it must be clear and effective.
In addition to your technical skills, you’ll be expected to have “soft skills” or “people skills”. You’ll be expected to demonstrate that through good interpersonal skills you’ll be able to interact with others within the organisation and outside of it and play many important roles whether is presenting your work, couching and mentoring colleagues, advising and mediating as well as collaborating with your managers and other team players within your section or across other departments.
Clear and concise communication requires understanding who is the recipient of the information, what method would be most effective for that particular message and person (phone call, e-mail, meeting) and it’s also about the choice of language and the right level of technical jargon used. Paired with a professional work ethos, showing confidence in your knowledge and inspiring others to do the same you are certain to succeed and in your success lies that of your organisation”
