My name is Diane Thomas and over the past 3 years of working at Just IT Training, as a Career Support Manager I have faced many difficult situations which involve outlining and discussing each candidate’s personal strengths and weaknesses. The problem is not many people want to face up to the reality that there are certain barriers that may hinder them from securing a job in technical support. Factors from their personal appearance to their written style of communication all have to be addressed in order for candidates to have a successful lifelong career in the IT industry.
My team of career support consultants has seen hundreds of candidates secure jobs which is a fantastic feeling and makes the job very satisfying. I also envision the moment of glory for both the candidate, and our company, when the news travels that a candidate has secured employment in the field they have passionately pursued over the past years. I have noted however that the moment of glory is reserved for those who listen and take advice, and not for those who refuse to believe that they should read up about a company and the role before they enter the interview room.
The fact is that there are about 30 -50 things that allow one candidate to get a job in IT before another person and we know what these things are. Having a recruitment company as Just IT means we are always in touch with what employers and agencies are looking for. This allows us to give clear direction to candidates about how to stand out from the crowd – which is vital in this competitive job market.
Although my job can be challenging in dealing with many personality types, there is a deep satisfaction gained from observing candidates from all walks of life secure IT roles. The pleasure gained from supporting a candidate for the duration of the course and seeing their joy once they have secured a job is indescribable.
