Should you go to university, or to do a course at Just IT?

Whilst we train a lot of people who come out of university and find it difficult to get a job, we are also training more and more people who chose to invest a smaller amount of time and money in doing a course at Just IT, rather than going to university. Everyone’s different, so for some people university is a great way to develop their confidence and life experiences before going to work, but for Andy Iles that was not the case. Andy is a candidate who actually dropped out of university (not an easy decision to take!) and joined Just IT and this is his story. It’s inspiring!

Hi Simon
So I’d just finished my first year at Plymouth University doing a degree in computing, it was great but I wasn’t sure what to do next; stay on for a further 3 years and get the degree or leave now and get my foot on the career ladder.
After a few long nights searching high and low on the internet at which qualifications were the most sought after in the IT field one course kept appearing: The programme from JustIT – combining the basic Comptia a+ qualifications to the more advanced Cisco network stuff it was just the progressive learning curve I was looking for.
I was a bit apprehensive about the distance learning aspect but the test out software really is excellent. The self paced tutorials and videos - it’s almost like your sat in the classroom.
Away from the virtual world the trainers at JustIT know exactly what your prospective employer will be looking for. Of course it’s important to have relevant qualifications but nowadays you need to have qualifications that matches markets’ requirement.
Personally the most comforting thing was how the trainers made the hard and complex task of getting a job sound relatively simple.
With excellent CV help the staff were only a phone call away at any given time.
They helped me set achievable goals and held excellent workshops for interview prep and just genuinely wanting me to achieve the best I could.
It’s not all one way traffic though. It takes a lot of self discipline and self motivation (but how good does that look on a CV!)
If you study hard and stay focussed it will be no problem and the best way to achieve it is to think about your investment and your future.
I’ve now just finished my Windows XP MCP and have been in a first line support job for the past 8 weeks.
There was no placement needed as the qualifications I had already gained were exactly what i needed to get the job.
Thank you JustIT!
