We have a team of recruitment consultants at Just IT Recruitment and we asked one of them what they looked for in the candidates that they place into jobs. Was it Cisco skills? What about a MCSE? How about a lot of experience in working in IT? Well, you would be surprised that many people have good certifications and experience already, so it’s interesting to hear that Personality is a big hit with many employers. Here are his comments;

“I have found more and more over the last couple of years of working in IT Recruitment that the personality of an interviewee is one of the most important thing employers look for. It seems that for the majority of clients I work with that the general consensus is that you can be very close to the mark with technical skills required for a specific position, however the overriding factor that makes the difference between an offer and a rejection is the rapport building, enthusiasm, hunger to learn and general “likeability” of the candidate.

Take one example of a client I recently recruited for. The brief was that I find a candidate with strong windows networking skills (both Windows and Cisco ability), with the ability to provide a consistently high level of service to the client. Successful candidates taken through to second stage were solely the ones who the client could see going onto client site, building instant rapport with the organisation and having an certain amount of business acumen to appreciate why the client needs support at any given moment. Of course, technical ability needed to be at a certain level, however the reason for looking past this was that “you can train the right person with technical skills, but you cannot teach someone a new personality”. This specific client chose personality over technical abilities”
