My name is Samantha McNeilly and I am a Senior Consultant within our Graduate Recruitment Team here at Just IT. My key responsibilities are to help support the candidates that complete the Network Professional Programme into jobs in the Technical Support and Network sector. I also organise work experience for candidates that have completed our course and want to gain some commercial IT Support experience. Whilst Just IT has been placing people into IT jobs since 2001, I have almost 5 years experience supporting Just IT candidates into their first IT Support role. My role naturally involves giving candidates guidance about the market, job roles and interview techniques. There is some good advice on the Just IT web site, but below are the common mistakes we find people make at interviews when trying to get a job:
Failure to connect yourself to the job offered. Many candidates do not look at a job specification and draw from it a company’s needs for the role. Candidates should be able to connect their experiences, work history, transferable skills and strengths to the description. If they can do this it will answer the essential reasons for why they are suitable for the role.
Not preparing for the interview. We often find that candidates who do not fully prepare are more likely to be unsuccessful at getting the job. Thorough research about the company is essential. Writing out answers that you have difficulty with and practising those answers so the delivery is smooth but not over rehearsed helps.
Inadequate Answers: Interviews naturally make candidates nervous or can catch people off guard and as a result they give very short answers that don’t convey much information. This can be interpreted as being lazy or not interested in the role. It also makes it very difficult for the interviewer to assess whether you are right for the job. Take time to review common job interview questions and decide in advance how you will handle them.
