What is the difference between being a contractor or a permanent member of staff?

Contracting is a great place to start for anybody trying to break into the IT industry as companies are more inclined to take someone with no industry experience as a contractor due to reduced risk.
When companies are looking to recruit people on a permanent basis they are more inclined to offer someone who has or is still contracting there as opposed to someone who has just been introduced to them.

There are numerous examples where one of our clients here at Just IT have offered to employ people on a contract to permanent basis. Employers of junior IT people see the benefit of taking on one of our candidates new to the industry on a contract basis with a view to converting their contract to permanent employment 1-3 month later once they have proven their skills to the company.

The benefits to candidates are clear. As no two projects or companies are the same contracting gives you the opportunity to not only see how different organisations work but will give you exposure to different types of working environments, projects and technologies which will broaden your skill set and increase your contacts within the industry.

Contracting can also be more lucrative as most contractors get paid more for the same position as somebody permanent and depending on the contract, some get per hour which means they get extra compensation for any extra work they have to complete.

So although most people go straight into a permanent job after completing the technical training and work placement there are many who benefit from being contactors as their first step into the IT industry.
