Cool 5 Tech Devices Inspired by Films

There have been a lot of cool movies that have been released over the years, the technology in some of them was just wow! Have you ever looked back at films from the past and realised that the ‘made-up’ devices they had in them have nearly been created now? Here we look at the top 5 films which inspired tech. It was as if these films predicted the future.

Hoverboard – Back To The Future II (1989)

When we were kids, we thought that by now we would have flying cars and cloning would become the new ‘thing’. Now if we take a look at Back To The future II which was set in 2015, Marty McFly had the hoverboard which seemed like a really cool device back then. Well the movie was not that wrong with its timing; although the tech didn’t quite live up to the movie, the hoverboard became the must-have gadget of 2015.

Virtual Reality Headset – Total Recall (1990) and the Matrix (1999)

These two 90’s films had both envisioned what virtual reality would look like and what it would mean to humans. At the time of watching these films, we could have seen it as completely made-up and that technology could never be advanced like that, not in our lifetime anyway. Well that’s what we thought until we started getting closer to the real thing when the Oculus Rift was released on March 28th 2016. OK, so it’s still far from the technology in those films, but new virtual worlds are being created.

Self-Driving Cars – Minority Report (2002)

The director of the film, Steven Spielberg turned to Lexus to design the self-driving car for his sci-fi film, Minority Report. This was not the only film where self-driving cars appeared, iRobot, Batman, Demolition Man and Knight Rider also showed them. Fiction got closer to reality when Google announced the test trials of self-driving cars to commence in January 2015. Perhaps we will get to relax and let our cards drive us around one day soon!

Pepper the Robot – iRobot (2004)

Robot is set in a time where humans have robots which help them with their domestics and keep them company, well we could one day be looking at this happening. In 2016, Pepper was released to businesses who provide a service and to people who are looking for a companion. We know that robots from the film are not around yet, but Pepper has been a huge start and has showed us what technology may eventually do for us.

3D Holograms – Star Wars (1977) and Iron Man (2008)

We all saw Iron Man using his hologram computer and moving objects around. Now most of us probably looked at that film and imagined what it would be like to have that in our homes or office! Well the existence of holograms is not far away, in fact we are so close to them already. A lot of work is currently going on to create 3D holograms that can be seen without 3D glasses. Sony have already released their 360-Degree 3D display which could be viewed from any direction back in 2009, now hologram technology is only going to start getting more advanced.
